History Education Foundation — From WordPress to an AI-Native Rails App

Migrating the History Education Foundation off WordPress and into a custom, AI-native Ruby on Rails application.

The result

Off WordPress and onto a custom AI-native Rails application the foundation owns.

Where it started

The History Education Foundation, working with Kason Kendall, was on WordPress — the default starting point for so many organizations, and the place many of them eventually outgrow. As the foundation's needs grew past what a CMS and its plugins comfortably handle, the question became how to move to something they could actually build on.

What we built

We migrated the foundation off WordPress and into a custom, AI-native Ruby on Rails application — moving from a templated CMS to real software that can be shaped to exactly what the foundation needs and extended with AI from the ground up rather than bolted on after the fact.

Why it matters

WordPress is a great way to start and a frustrating place to be stuck. Migrating to a custom AI-native Rails application means the foundation owns its software and can keep evolving it — instead of fighting plugins and theme constraints, every change is just a change to their own application.
